Hilary Poole BCom BPhysEd
Chair - Board of Governors

Hilary was appointed to the Diocesan School Board and the role of Chair in May 2007. In her role, she leads and organizes the Board, chairs the Succession Committee and is a member of the Human Resources Committee.

Hilary is a current parent and an old girl of Diocesan School for Girls (1969-1981). Hilary graduated from Otago University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing and Economics) and a Bachelor of Physical Education. She has pursued mainly a commercial career, and has expertise in strategy and marketing. Hilary was appointed CDhief Executive of Hockey New Zealand in 2009, and retains an appointment as an independent director of a Hamilton based food business, Prolife Foods Ltd.

Hilary is past chair and trustee of the Diocesan School Heritage Foundation, past member of the Old Girls League Committee and previously chaired First Foundation.

Hilary enjoys golf, running, tramping and skiing. She spends as much time as possible with her husband, Paul Dougherty, and their three school-aged children.

 

 

 

Richard Adams BCom LLB ACA
Board of Governors

Richard joined the Diocesan Board in April 2005 and chairs the Human Resources Committee. He is also a member of the Finance and Audit, Campus Development and Succession Committees. Richard was born in Auckland and qualified with commerce and law degrees from Auckland University. He initially trained as an accountant, then moved into investment management, and for the last 15 years has been involved in manufacturing, part owning two businesses making a wide range of products for the New Zealand market.

Richard is not new to School governance as he spent a period of 5 years on Victoria Avenue Primary School’s Board of Trustees while his three children were attending that school.

Richard is married to Ruth. Their daughter, Claire graduated from Diocesan School in 2008. They also have two adult sons. He enjoys the outdoors, and is a keen runner, cyclist, tramper, skier and tennis player. He is the President of the Auckland City Athletics Club, having been involved since that Club’s inception in 1998.

Richard has a strong desire to ensure Diocesan continues to offer the best academic, sporting and cultural opportunities to all its students.

 

 

 

 

The Right Reverent Ross Bay
BTh, PGDipTheol, GIFireE
Bishop of Auckland
Board of Governors

Ross Bay has been ordained the 11th Bishop of Auckland for the Anglican Church at a ceremony held on 17 April 2010. He replaces Bishop John Paterson on the Board of Governors and is also a member of the group with an interest in the Special Character of Diocesan.

Bishop Ross was born in Auckland and grew up in Papatoetoe. He has previously served in several Auckland parishes, including St Mark’s Church in Remuera and most recently as Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral. He was ordained in 1989, having begun his working life with the Bank of New Zealand before undertaking his theological education.

Outside the church, Bishop Ross is a member of Rotary, and enjoys squash and tramping in the mountains with his wife Jacquie. As a member of the Auckland Volunteer Fire Police he helps out in emergencies.

Ross also has a personal connection with Diocesan School for Girls. His wife, Jacquie, is an Old Girl of the School and also taught Science at Dio, was appointed Head of Department and held that position until 2006 when she became the first director of the Liggins Education Network for Science at The University of Auckland.

 

 

 

 

Dean Ellwood CA
Board of Governors

Dean joined the Diocesan Board in 2010 and is Chair of the Board’s Finance and Audit Committee.

Dean currently chairs the Diocesan School Sports Foundation and is an Accounting and Advisory Partner at Deloitte in Auckland. He works closely with a number of clients across a range of sectors advising owners and management on growth, finance and governance issues. Dean holds director, advisory board and trustee positions with a number of Deloitte’s clients and is also Chair of the Foundation for Youth Development, a leading organisation managing youth development programmes such as Kiwi Can and Project K which are aimed to inspire school age children to reach their full potential.

Dean and his wife Lynley have three daughters, two of whom are still at Diocesan (Years 13 and 8). Their eldest completed Year 13 in 2008.

Dean enjoys travel with his family and, in between hockey seasons, spending as much time as possible relaxing atthe beach and out on the water fishing.

 

 

 

 

Ian Goodall ANZIQS
Board of Governors

Ian is the younger of two sons born to Bob and Jean Goodall in Te Awamutu where he lived until his late teens. He was appointed to the Board of Governors in February 2004, is a keen supporter of Diocesan and has been actively involved with the school for over 20 years. He worked on the development of the School Master Plan, is Chair of the Campus Development Committee and also sits on the Succession Committee. Ian is also part of the group with an interest in Boarding at Diocesan.

His career commenced by completing a Carpentry and Joinery Apprenticeship and subsequently qualifying as a Quantity Surveyor, working initially in Hamilton and later in Auckland where in 1979 he started his own Construction and Development businesses. Ian sold the last of his construction interests at the end of March 2007 and now manages his commercial property interests and a serviced office business in Newmarket - Auckland Business Centre Limited.

He and his wife Barbara have been married for 34 years and both their now adult daughters attended Diocesan. Barbara’s mother is an Old Girl and boarded in School House in the 1930s. Ian’s mother is a Waikato Dio Old Girl.

Ian and his wife are avid travellers. They cycle, enjoy golf (sometimes!), water skiing and fishing. They live in Parnell and holiday often at their home at Lake Taupo.

 

 

 

 

Madeline Hernon Dip Physio, PGD. ManipPhyty
Board of Governors

Madeline was appointed to the Board in February 2008 and is chair of the Community Relations Committee and is also involved with the Sports Foundation.

She is an old girl of Diocesan School for Girls (1977- 1983), parent to a Junior School Pupil, Annabel (y5), and daughter of an old girl. Madeline is passionate about both the school’s heritage and values and the Dio Family - where every pupil and their family have a strong sense of belonging and are committed to upholding the school’s values and principles.

Madeline is a physiotherapist and owns a number of practices. She has worked extensively with international sports teams - as part of the NZ Team at Sydney and Athens Olympics, Commonwealth Games, World Youth Olympics, World University Games, Silver Ferns, NZ Basketball, NZ Athletics, and Alinghi Americas Cup team. She has lectured internationally for the Olympic Committee.

 

 

 

 

Bridget Kool (nee Macnicol) PRGON, BHSc(nursing), Masters Public Health, PhD
Board of Governors

Bridget attended Dio from 1970 to1977. Her mother, aunts, numerous cousins, and two sisters also attended Dio. Bridget and her husband Tom currently have two daughters at Dio, their eldest daughter completed year 13 at Dio in 2007. They also have a son who completed Auckland Grammar in 2009.

In her professional life Bridget is a lecturer and post doctoral research fellow at the University of Auckland. Bridget completed her PhD in 2009 having carried out epidemiological research in the area of unintentional injury at the University of Auckland.

Bridget believes in the core values that Dio offers, and feels privileged to be on the Board of Governors and be able to contribute to the governance of the school. She is involved with the Community Relations Committee, a Trustee of the Heritage Foundation and part of the Dig Deep Steering Committee. Bridget also has involvement with the Old Girls League and is part of the group with an interest in Boarding at Diocesan.

 

 

 

 

Dr John Langley ONZM, JP, MEd (Dist), PhD (Cant), Adv DipTchg, DipTchg (End.), MRSNZ
Board of Governors

Dr John Langley is a senior educator with numerous accomplishments in education, business, government and project leadership. He has lead a number of organisations and projects at local, national and international level and has been involved in the strategic direction setting and operations of a Crown entity, a large tertiary institution and a private company.

John is currently Chief Executive Officer of Cognition Education, Auckland. He was previously the inaugural Dean of the Faculty of Education at The University of Auckland. As Principal of Auckland College of Education, he led the amalgamation between the College and the University to form the new Faculty of Education on the 1st of September 2004.

John has held offices in a number of educational groups such as the New Zealand Association for Research in Education, the Asia Pacific Education Deans Association, the Independent Advisory Group on Youth Offending reporting to several cabinet ministers on youth offending strategies, Expert Advisory Group on the treatment and policy implementation for children and young people with conduct problems, the Teacher Workforce Advisory Group reporting to the Minister of Education, the board of Youth Horizon Trust and the board of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority to name but some.

John has been a teacher, teacher of the deaf, lecturer in a college of education, principal of a large primary school, and was a founding director of a private teachers college in Christchurch. He is also a qualified psychologist.

John’s professional interests lie in the fields of applied behaviour analysis, teacher education, teacher effectiveness, school improvement, policy development and implementation and international education.

As a former principal of Auckland College of Education, director of the Teacher Registration Board, a school principal and head of a large education business, John’s knowledge in areas relating to the role he will play in education in the future include leadership, community partnerships, public-private partnerships, international relations and developments in education.

In January 2009 John was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) for services to education.

John joined the Diocesan Board of Governors in June 2009 and is involved with the Curriculum and Assessment Committee.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Reverend Canon Caroline Leys
STM Gen Theological Seminary NY
Board of Governors

Caroline Leys is an Anglican Priest. Since ordination as a priest in 1990 she has worked in private practice as a therapist, facilitator and trainer. Her particular area of interest is spirituality. She works both inside and beyond the Christian community assisting individuals and groups to identify core beliefs and practices and integrate these into actions.

Caroline has been a member of the Diocesan Board of Governors since 2004 and chairs the Curriculum and Assessment Committee. She is also part of the Special Character group.

Caroline is married to Stephen, and together they have two adult children and three grandchildren.

 

 

 

 

 

Martin O'Halloran BBus (Marketing)
Board of Governors

Martin joined the Diocesan Board in May 2010 and has involvement with the Community Relations Committee.

Martin is the current Chairman of DDB Australia/New Zealand, one of the region’s largest advertising/communications groups. Martin has worked for DDB for over 20 years and specialises in business and brand engagement strategy. Martin’s agency in New Zealand was recently named NBR Agency of the Year and in 2008 Martin was named Asia Pacific CEO of the Year by Media Magazine.

Martin and his wife, Deborah, currently have two daughters attending Diocesan.

 

 

 

 

 
 

Andrew Peterson LLB (Otago) LLM (Chicago)
Board of Governors

Andrew joined the Diocesan Board in May 2008 and is committed to ensuring that the school provides the very best environment for all the girls. Andrew chairs the Student Support Committee and is part of the Campus Development Committee.

He is a partner with Russell McVeagh where he heads the firm’s specialist competition practice. He holds a law degree from Otago University and a masters degree from the University of Chicago.

Andrew is married to Laetitia, who he met in Chicago but comes from Belgium. They have two children: a daughter at Diocesan (year 9) and a son at St Kentigern’s School (year 6). Andrew enjoys spending time with his family and family activities, travelling, fishing and relaxing at the beach..

 

 

 

 
 

Catherine Ryan LLB DipEd
Board of Governors

Catherine became a member of the Board of Governors in June 2001 and is committed to ensuring Diocesan offers an environment providing excellence in education. She is a member of the Curriculum and Assessment, the Community relations and the Student Support Committees. Catherine is also involved with Dio Arts.

She is a lawyer and practices in the field of Health Law and Ethics and is a member of a Medical Complaints Trust. Catherine is clinical advisor to the three Auckland District Heath Boards.

Catherine is married to Don and they have two daughters. Elizabeth graduated from Diocesan in 2003 and Lucy in 2008.

Catherine considers Diocesan challenges girls and offers a diverse range of learning experiences and opportunities.
