Options
The process of choosing option subjects for study in the Senior School is very important as decisions made without considering the long term implications can limit opportunities at later levels. The general guideline is to keep choices as broad as possible for as long as possible and to be very aware of subjects which cannot be started at a later date.
Consider carefully which courses your immediate choices can lead to or can block off. Note the pre-requisite of subjects in higher levels and if there is a possibility you are interested in this subject, ensure your choices allow this pathway.
Your choices will be influenced by your interest and ability in specific subjects and the career areas to which you are attracted. Many students have not decided on a specific career path but may have a number of areas of interest. It is important to discuss these interests with the Career Services Director to ensure you are well informed on the requirements of each of them and do not limit your prospects by the wrong option choices. The Careers Services website offers you a great deal of information. Careers information and university courses change frequently and you need to be proactive in seeking the latest and most accurate information possible.
There are many people in addition to the Career Services Director who can give you advice on your choices. At the Senior Option Evening for Years 11-13 you will have the opportunity to visit subject Departments where Heads of Department and students studying the subject will be available to discuss your concerns. A separate evening for Year 9 is also held. Your subject teachers, tutor and dean will also be able to discuss the suitability of specific subjects for your interests and abilities. You may also visit Ms Young, Deputy Principal and Ms Buist Assistant Principal, for planning and advice.
