Years 7 to 10
Students entering in these formative years are supported in taking a broad course of study that allows for any future pathway. The teaching staff at this level of the school are all specialists in their area who have developed schemes of work that enrich students learning whilst preparing them for their future. All Sciences are taught in full laboratories with extensive opportunities to be involved in Education Outside the Classroom. English, Mathematics and Social Studies along with Religious Education, Physical Education and Health make up the core component of the compulsory course. Opportunities for learning also occur through our curriculum programmes in science fair, the Crest Award, maths competitions, writing programmes and Enterprise Studies.
Languages are particularly strong in our school, with all girls having a taster programme in Year 7 leading up to Year 9 girls selecting two languages and at least one in Year 10. Language study provides a platform for the NCEA pathways and the requirements of the IB Diploma. Languages also support the future focus Diocesan has on preparing girls for life in the 21st century where second language and culture understanding will be essential.
Opportunities exist for some students to accelerate into an NCEA class which is available in year 10, along with enrichment programmes for girls to develop their own interests in learning. Critical thinking is developed in all programmes of work. The academic staff assist with monitoring of student work and decision making. All girls benefit from having appropriate assessment programmes that provide feedback to students, both formally and informally.
