Education outside the classroom (EOTC)
EOTC, or Education Outside the Classroom, is an annual event that occurs every March. Students participate in a week-long programme of varied activities, educational opportunities and experiences outside the classroom.
The aims of our EOTC programme are:
| • |
to encourage personal development and awareness by building self-esteem and confidence |
| • |
to develop social skills by co-operating within small groups of their peers |
| • |
to develop sound ecological attitudes based on respect, knowledge and understanding |
| • |
to develop outdoor skills in camp craft, bush walking, canoeing and rock climbing |
| • |
to enrich and integrate other academic disciplines |
Our hope is that students, armed with the necessary skills, confidence and positive memories of their school EOTC experiences, find the outdoors a place where they can gain great enjoyment and fulfillment throughout their lives.
Overseas Trips
The Languages Department of Diocesan School for Girls offers 6 languages – French, German, Japanese, Latin, Spanish and Te Reo Maori. Trips to the various countries take place on a regular basis and take a variety of formats, but the overriding aim of these trips is to give students first hand experience in dealing with the different culture and language they have been learning about at school. Time spent in the country of the language provides opportunities for students to try out what they have learnt in class and immerse themselves in the culture and language of that country.
Every two years a group of students from Diocesan visits our Sister School, Juntoku Girls’ High School, Tokyo, Japan for two weeks, during which time our girls experience school and family life, living with a Japanese family, and visit a lot of the famous sights of Japan. Every alternate year we reciprocate the hospitality shown to us in Japan when a group of Juntoku students visit Diocesan.
Every year, for six weeks over the Christmas holidays, students of German are able to take part in an exchange with our Partner School, Hans Sachs Gymnasium in Nuremberg. They live with a German family and experience all there is to offer in Germany at Christmas time, as well as visit other areas of Germany. They can then host their German ‘partners’ when they come to Diocesan the following year.
