Outstanding success for Dio swimmers
Hard work pays off for Dio in school and club competitions

What a term for the Dio swimmers!

The Dio swimming team have been working hard in the pool achieving some outstanding results for the school and local clubs.

Starting out with the School Championships, Dio’s team of 19 swimmers qualified for the Auckland Champions of Champions finals.

Captains Jesse Welsh and Aimee Crosbie led the way, picking up a series of individual medals. Aimee won double gold in the 50m butterfly and 50m freestyle and Jesse won gold in the 50m backstroke and bronze in the 50m freestyle. Year 13 Lucy McKinnon won silver in the 50m breaststroke.

We had a host of placings in the relays and these were as follows:

Girls’ Open Butterfly Relay – Gold (Lucy McKinnon, Jesse Welsh, Sophie Shorter-Robinson, Aimee Crosbie)

Girls’ 16-18 Medley Relay – Gold (Sophie Shorter-Robinson, Lucy McKinnon, Aimee Crosbie, Jesse Welsh)

Girls’ 16-18 Freestyle Relay – Silver (Jesse Welsh, Lucy McKinnon, Nathalie Hull, Aimee Crosbie)

Girls’ 16-18 Breaststroke Relay – Silver (Noor Lovatt, Peta Clark, Arabella White, Nathalie Hull)

Girls’ 13 and under Breaststroke Relay – Silver (Lucy Gilleece, Molly Sherrard, Aaliyah Dye, Grace Jeromson)

Girls’ 14-15 Freestyle Relay – Bronze (Leila Ibrahim, Vita Yarrell-Stevenson, Arabella Duncan, Eva Allan)

Moving on to the club events – over the past few weeks a lot of the Dio swimmers have been representing their clubs at the National Open and National Age Group Championships. The results were as follows:

National Open Championships:

Aimee Crosbie: Open Silver – 50m butterfly, 17/18 years Gold – 50m butterfly, 17/18 years Silver – 100m butterfly, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle

Jesse Welsh: Open Bronze – 100m backstroke, 17/18 years Gold – 100m backstroke, 17/18 years Bronze – 50m backstroke

Lucy McKinnon: Open Bronze – 200m breaststroke, 17/18 years old Silver – 200m breaststroke, 17/18 years Bronze – 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke

Eva Allen, Nathalie Hull and Noor Lovatt also raced at the champs and made Open B & C Finals.

Top Dio swimmers Aimee Crosbie, Jesse Welsh and Lucy McKinnon each won their first Open National medals and re-qualified for the Swimming New Zealand Development Squad.

Aimee Crosbie was also selected as one of 10 girls on the New Zealand Junior Team to compete at the Junior Pan Pacific Games in the 100m butterfly and the 4x100m freestyle relay. However due to Covid-19 and the cancellation of many domestic and international meets, this team is unable to compete.

National Age Group Championships:

Jesse Welsh (17 years and over): Gold – 50m backstroke, 400m freestyle; Silver – 200m backstroke, 100m freestyle; Bronze – 100m backstroke, 50m freestyle

Aimee Crosbie (17 years and over): Gold – 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle; Silver – 50m butterfly; Bronze – 100m butterfly

Lucy McKinnon (17 years and over): Gold – 200m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke; Silver – 200m IM; Bronze – 50m breaststroke

Noor Lovatt (15 years): Gold – 200m breaststroke; Silver – 400m IM; Bronze – 50m breaststroke, 100m breaststroke

Eva Allan (15 years): Silver – 100m freestyle; Bronze – 50m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 800m freestyle

Peta Clark (15 years): Bronze – 400m freestyle

Nathalie Hull (17 years and over): Bronze – 100m breaststroke

Grace Jeromson (12/13 years): Bronze – 100m breaststroke
