This is designed so that the best of the Senior orienteers are expected to be in the forest for around an hour, while the less skilled navigators and runners take significantly longer than that.
In the Senior and Intermediate divisions, all Dio participants finished in the top 10, with many of our Year 7 and 8 runners competing at Championship level for the first time.
Despite some contestants running off the map completely, and several taking half an hour or more to find a single control, none of them abandoned the race. This demonstrates the perseverance that orienteering breeds, and lays the groundwork for future success in the sport.
These impressive placings resulted in Dio being named third equal in the Top Schools competition, along with St Kent’s Girls. With continued dedication and development, Dio is poised to challenge Baradene and St Cuthbert’s for the top spots again.
