Dr Sandra Hastie is an accomplished educational leader with a distinguished career in guiding high-performing girls’ schools across Australasia.
Most recently, Sandra was Principal of Somerville House, one of Queensland’s preeminent academic girls’ schools, and prior to this, was Principal of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School in New Zealand. Previous senior leadership roles include Principal of Saint Kentigern Girls’ School, as well as Head of Primary for both Saint Kentigern Schools. At Somerville House, she was instrumental in establishing both the IB Primary Years Programme and the IB Diploma Programme for the Senior School.
Sandra holds a Doctor of Education from the University of Auckland, where her research into the importance of student goal setting and its impact on academic achievement remains an area that she is deeply passionate about. She also holds a Master of Educational Administration (Hons), a Bachelor of Education, and a Diploma in Teaching.
A future-focused and innovative leader, Sandra is passionate about unlocking the full potential of every student. She believes that when girls are nurtured in a supportive, challenging, and inspiring environment, they gain the confidence and skills to thrive in any field. Sandra maintains that educating girls is not only vital for their personal growth and empowerment, but also for building more equitable, innovative, and compassionate communities.
Growing up as the youngest, and only girl in a sporting family, she developed a passion for sport that saw her represent her province in hockey, squash, and tennis, and compete in Premier Division Football in Christchurch. Sandra also has a deep appreciation for the Arts, having been a competitive tap dancer until aged sixteen. Today, she enjoys watching all sports and stays active by playing golf, cycling, and is a passionate supporter of the Arts in all forms.
