Our students have the unique opportunity to choose from two education pathways:

Both pathways offer a wide range of subjects to suit the individual interests and strengths of each student. Whichever path they choose, every student will learn Ethics and Philosophy to help her develop a deeper understanding of critical thinking along with our Leadership and Service Learning programme.

How it works

Students in Years 1-6 follow the Primary Years Programme (an IB programme). In 2020 Dio began implementing the Middle Years Programme starting with Year 7. Currently we run this programme across our Years 7 – 9. The Middle Years Program; a comprehensive framework that is reflective of the IB Philosophy. Throughout the program our students deepen their curiosity and take ownership of their learning as they explore passions and start to make real-world connections.

Diocesan School for Girls is a Candidate School for the Middle Years Programme. The school is pursuing authorization, expanding its status to a 3-programme, IB World School. Only schools authorised by the IB Organisation can offer any of its four academic programmes: the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), the Diploma Programme (DP), or the Career-related Programme (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorisation will be granted. For further information about the IB and its programmes, visit www.ibo.org.

Should we become authorised, from Years 7-10 all students will continue through the Middle Years Programme. At Year 11 all students then begin their NCEA Level 1 and gain this qualification by the end of the year. During Year 11 students decide whether to carry on with NCEA for Levels 2 and 3 in Years 12 and 13 or to begin the two year IB Diploma Programme.

National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA)

NCEA is our national qualification for senior secondary students. NCEA offers a broad and flexible framework that is highly regarded worldwide for challenging all students, including the most able and highly motivated.

At Dio, our NCEA students consistently perform well above national averages.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB)

International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. The organisation works with schools, governments and international organisations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment. These programmes encourage students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. Our IB students at Dio consistently perform highly against world averages.
