Real-life experiences

To a curious mind, seeing is believing, that’s why we give students the opportunity to get involved in real-life experiences that build on their learning through Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC).

Depending on their Year group, students take part in a variety of experiences throughout the year. In all cases these link back to their unit of enquiry (or learning in the classroom).

We have many examples, but some recent examples for Junior School students have included visits to a local Marae, a retirement village, the Auckland Museum, and the Howick historic village.

Overnight EOTC Experiences (Camps) – Year 3-4

Students in our Year 3 and Year 4 group have an introductory ‘camp’ experience which includes an overnight experience. We tailor this to the ‘age and stage’ of our students.

Our Year 3 students have a 2 day/1-night experience. During the day they have day trips which allow them to explore the outdoors and push their boundaries in nature. They then overnight at school. We tailor this experience to ensure it is appropriate for our students age, but give our students a taste of a camp experience.

Year 4 students, have a 3 day/ 2-night experience which is water based. Most recently this has been held at Long Bay where students were able to experience water activities such as kayaking and swimming as well as rock climbing and archery. Camps for Years 3 and 4 generally occur in Term 4.

Our Year 6 students, have a 5 day/ 4 night experience which recently has been based on Kawau Island. Here students experienced a range of water activities such as sailing, kayaking, building rafts, fishing and orienteering. Camps for this Year group generally occur in Term 1.
