It was a special evening where we acknowledge academic success and honour the hard work and effort that goes into achieving success.
Our guest speaker was alumna Dr. Conor Tarrant. Connor was awarded a scholarship to attend Diocesan in Year 9 and throughout her years at Dio, she excelled in so many aspects of learning. In Junior High School she was Dux at the end of Year 10 and in 2017 she received the Dorothy Shrewsbury Bursary for the top Year 12 student.
As an athlete she was highly accomplished at swimming and was nationally ranked, as well as achieving top marks to become joint Dux in 2018. She studied Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Economics and English and her teachers commented on her enthusiasm, self-motivation and insightful analysis. Conor generated a near perfect academic record across all five years, while demonstrating consistent excellence across all her subjects. Conor was always fully engaged in the class, making perceptive and valuable contributions. She won an academic scholarship award to the University of Otago and went on to complete her medical training. She continues to show what is possible with her academic career.
These attributes and attainments are set out because they provide a rich history and tradition at Diocesan of outstanding achievement. We pass on a clear understanding of how excellence is achieved – it is through hard work and commitment. Organisation, resilience and teamwork are learned along the way and we are always impressed with how our girls take on the academic challenge with rigour and confidence. But Conor also had another message to share. Conor advised students to celebrate their achievements but take a wider view of life – which she learnt at Dio. Conor wanted our scholars not to define themselves through examination results alone, rather felt that aiming for balance and developing the ‘whole person’, should be a key goal for our students. Our Academic prefect Belle Opie also shared this view in her address on the evening.
We celebrate all our prize winners and congratulate each scholar on the commitment and dedication they have demonstrated – each one making us proud!
