Adolescence – Currently on Netflix
A useful book to have on hand is 'Keeping our Kids Safe' by Gloria Masters.

In her book, Gloria Masters outlines a useful checklist for parents:

  • Have regular conversations with your child about online safely, including the risks associated with sharing personal information with strangers online.
  • Do a monthly check in to oversee what your child is doing/playing (also do regular, random spot checks).
  • Check in with your online safety net provider to receive their guidelines.
  • Establish rules and guidelines for internet use including time limits, appropriate websites, and the importance of reporting any uncomfortable online interactions.
  • Monitor your child’s online activities. Keep computers and devices in common areas of the house to maintain visibility.
  • Teach your child about privacy settings on social media platforms and the importance of limiting who can view their profile and posts.
  • Stay informed about the apps, games, and websites your child is using, and be aware of any new platforms they may be exploring.
  • Educate your child about the tactics used in grooming and sextortion, including the importance of not sharing images with anyone.
  • Help your child develop critical thinking skills to discern between trustworthy and potentially harmful online sources and contacts.
  • Be vigilant for signs of distress, changes in behaviour, withdrawal from family and friends, or secrecy about online activities.
