Dio Careers Service
We often see the mix of excitement and anxiety that comes with planning for the future here at Dio.

Students are frequently told that excelling at school is key to success, but what they don’t always hear is that success is not solely defined by academic grades. Having a growth mindset and the perseverance to follow one’s passion is just as—if not more—important. The reality is that 60% of the jobs our students will one day hold don’t even exist yet, making it crucial to focus on the ‘next best step’ rather than a rigid long-term plan.

From Year 11, students begin to explore career pathways, considering what subjects to study and what opportunities lie ahead. While some have a clear direction, others are unaware of the vast range of possibilities beyond the traditional university route. That’s where our Careers team steps in. They provide expert guidance, arrange Expos, and ensure every student receives the support they need. By the time students reach Year 13, they have access to one-on-one career planning sessions, ensuring they are well-prepared for their next chapter.

A Range of Career Pathways

At Diocesan, the majority of our students lean towards university as their preferred pathway, with 95% of Year 13 leavers transitioning straight into higher education. However, we recognise that university is not the only option. Vocational training, apprenticeships, gap years, and direct entry into the workforce are all viable alternatives that can lead to fulfilling careers. Our Careers team makes sure every student understands all available pathways, helping them make informed decisions that align with their aspirations and strengths.

For those unsure of their future studies, we encourage a broad approach, allowing flexibility to refine their interests over time. Interestingly, a recent survey of our leavers found that the vast majority continued with their initial study choices, confirming that early guidance and support play a critical role in career satisfaction.

Exploring International Opportunities

Overseas study is becoming increasingly popular among our students, with nearly a quarter of our 2023 graduates choosing to study abroad. Australia remains the top international destination, followed by the United States and the United Kingdom. The process of applying to overseas universities can be daunting, but our Careers team offers expert assistance, ensuring students navigate applications, scholarships, and enrolment with confidence.

With over 40 universities in Australia and more than 4,000 in the United States, selecting the right institution can feel overwhelming. Our careers advisors have visited top universities, including Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, and institutions in Hong Kong, equipping them with the knowledge to guide students effectively. This has led to many of our girls securing places and scholarships at some of the most prestigious universities in the world.

Looking Ahead

At Diocesan, we believe in empowering our students to take charge of their futures with confidence. Whether they dream of attending a top university, starting an apprenticeship, or exploring a less traditional route, we are committed to guiding them every step of the way. Our Careers team is here to ensure that each girl’s journey beyond school is one of purpose, excitement, and possibility.
