Dio’s Lunar New Year Festival
Our inaugural Lunar New Year Festival was a joyful and vibrant addition to the Diocesan School for Girls calendar, bringing together students, families, staff and friends to celebrate culture, tradition and community.

Held on Sunday 1 March, our Lunar New Year Festival created a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together in recognition of the many cultures that make up our school. The campus was transformed with lanterns, music, food and activity, with a programme designed to share the spirit of Lunar New Year traditions with the wider Dio community.

Lunar New Year marks the beginning of the year on the lunar calendar. With roots deeply grounded in Chinese culture and history, the Lunar New Year Festival is now celebrated across many cultures throughout Asia and around the world. It is a time for renewal, gratitude, family and hope for the year ahead.

A central highlight of the afternoon were the performances that took place on the Lunar Lawn stage. Opening with a traditional Lion Dance, the afternoon continued with an array of student music, dance and song. Their enthusiasm and talent brought wonderful energy to the event and created a real sense of pride across the audience. Seeing students lead the cultural storytelling of the day was a special moment for many families and guests.

Across the wider campus, guests enjoyed a variety of food and activities that reflected the flavours and customs often associated with Lunar New Year celebrations. Families and students gathered to connect with one another and soak up the festive atmosphere while exploring the different stalls and displays around the festival space.

Beyond the entertainment and food, the festival also provided an opportunity for learning and connection. Students and families were able to engage with cultural traditions, discover the meaning behind Lunar New Year customs and celebrate the diversity within our school community. The success of this first Lunar New Year Festival reflects the strong sense of belonging that sits at the heart of Diocesan School for Girls.

A sincere thank you to our cornerstone sponsors (Craig’s, Bayleys, and Winger Motors), our Parent Advisory Committee, and to the many community members and businesses who contributed their time, talent and generosity to make the festival such a success.

Strong communities are built with care, intention and open hearts. Our Lunar New Year Festival was a beautiful reminder of that. Thank you to everyone who played a part.
