European Hockey Tour 2024 – A Reflection

Written by Hockey Code Captains Kate Wyber and Liv Barker:

The 2024 European Hockey Tour was an unforgettable experience—two incredible weeks filled with challenge, growth, and connection both on and off the turf. As a team, we returned not only stronger in our skills, but closer as a group and more inspired than ever. Here are some of the highlights from our journey.

We touched down in Amsterdam on 12 April and wasted no time, jumping straight into our first training session with M.H.C. De Kikkers hockey club. Despite the jet lag, we quickly adapted to the Dutch high-intensity, fast-paced style of play. That session set the tone for what would be an inspiring and demanding tour.

Exploring Amsterdam was another major highlight. From wandering the historic Dam Square to taking part in a guided walking tour, the city offered so much culture and character. A particularly moving experience was visiting the Anne Frank House—a moment of reflection we will never forget.

On 14 and 15 April we had the incredible privilege of training under Dutch hockey legend Jeroen Hertzberger—a three-time Olympian and international star. His elite-level insight, passion, and attention to detail gave us a real taste of professional hockey and left us with so much to take back to our own game.

During our time in the Netherlands, we also played matches against M.H.C. De Kikkers and H.C. Rotterdam. Competing against Dutch teams at our age level was both challenging and exhilarating. It was eye-opening to experience firsthand the standard of play from one of the top hockey nations in the world.

From 16-18 April we travelled south to Den Bosch to attend the European Hockey League (EHL) tournament. Watching the world’s best hockey players live—just metres away—was surreal. Meeting stars like Frédérique Matla and Yibbi Jansen made the experience even more unforgettable.

Our next stop was London, where we had more time to take in the sights and culture. Highlights included visiting the Tower of London, riding the London Eye, shopping along famous streets, and celebrating Easter with a beautiful mass at St Mary’s Church in Kensington.

On 21 April, we played our first UK match against Brombecks Hockey Club. Competing with a team from across the globe was a fantastic experience. Post-match socials gave us the chance to connect with our opponents, learn about their lives, and find common ground through sport.

A major highlight came the following day during a high-level training session at Surbiton Hockey Club, led by Will Fulker and former England captain Barry Middleton. Their expertise and energy were inspiring, and we left the pitch motivated and full of new skills.

Later that day, we faced Kingston Grammar, a strong British side that challenged us on every front. The next day tested us even further, with back-to-back matches against Bromley High School and a top-tier Surbiton team. The level of play was incredible, and it opened our eyes to what’s possible when high performance and passion come together. These games left us more determined than ever to lift the standard of Dio Hockey.

The tour wrapped up on 24 April with a visit to the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studios—a fun and fitting way to end an amazing adventure. Saying goodbye was tough, but we returned home with unforgettable memories, new perspectives, and a renewed sense of purpose heading into our season.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to our coaches, supporters, and everyone who helped make this dream a reality. We are truly grateful for the opportunity. This tour was far more than a hockey trip—it was a life-changing experience we’ll carry with us for years to come.
