While we appoint prefects earlier in the year, we wanted to acknowledge special leadership attributes – those students who work behind the scenes to make a difference to others. There are literally thousands of books and research articles written about leadership – it is a bit like trying to describe or measure air – we know it is there, we know how it affects us, and we know it is powerful enough to life an aircraft full of people. But how do you explain air and leadership? Two things that have an effect that you cannot always see.
We spend time each year identifying young women who are exceptional leaders – those who give of themselves, show kindness and empathy, and whose presence provides positivity and inspiration to others. This year we were delighted to appoint six honorary prefects who make a positive impact on our school community. We were delighted to acknowledge them along with reading a citation to describe their very fine personal attributes that have made a difference to others. The citations were written by their colleagues and Head Prefects Lotosina Tavui, and Deputy Head Prefect Ivy Barrington.
Congratulations to Year 13 students: Isabelle Dunlop, Xanthe Miller, Erin Veal, Daisy Wrapson, Indigo Riley, and Emma Young. We are very proud of you and the difference you have made to our community.
Erin Veal
To know Erin is to instantly feel like you’ve known her forever. She has that rare ability to connect with absolutely anyone. She’s approachable, easy going, and always up for a chat. Erin’s kindness is unmatched, she’s genuinely one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, and it’s impossible not to feel comfortable in her presence. She doesn’t seek attention or recognition, but the impact she has on the people around her is undeniable. Her natural ability to get along with everyone makes her a much loved presence in our school. Whether she’s cracking a quiet joke, showing up with a smile, or chatting with someone who needs it most, Erin brings a calm, steady light into every situation. In the water polo pool, she’s a strong and focused team player, bringing the same balance of strength and calmness that she carries through her everyday life. Erin is genuine, grounded, and incredibly humble, and it is these quiet qualities that make her such a standout member of Year 13. Congratulations, Erin!
Emma Young
When you think of the word kindness, you think of Emma. Though she is not always the loudest in the room, her warm presence is always felt. It is no exaggeration to say that Emma is one of the loveliest people you will ever meet. She shows genuine interest in the lives and achievements of others, yet remains incredibly humble about her own. As leader of the Dio Kapa Haka group and Deputy Rowing Captain, Emma truly embodies what it means to lead with heart. Her thoughtfulness, encouragement, and passion make her an excellent role model, both on the stage and on the water. She is what many would call a kind soul, and though she may not realise it, she is a true asset to Year 13. Emma may not seek praise, but those who know her see just how much she gives to the Dio community. Congratulations, Emma, for being a most deserving recipient of the Honorary Prefect title!
Daisy Wrapson
Daisy has always been a standout member of Year 13. Since Year 7, she has shown consistent commitment to the Dio values, not only in what she does for others, but in the way she stays genuine to herself. Her humour, reliability, and strong sense of justice are just a few of the many qualities that make her such a respected member of our school community. Daisy brings her full self to every challenge; both within the classroom, and in the way she looks out for others, speaks up for what is right, and stays grounded in her values. Her quick wit and humour brightens every room, and her willingness to always lend a helping hand does not go unnoticed. Anyone who knows Daisy can agree that she is someone you can truly count on. No matter her other commitments, she will always follow through in what she promises. Whether it’s offering to help out a teacher, volunteering at the Junior School After School Care, or even bringing in biscuits for her History class, her care and initiative in the little things make a big difference to those around her. We are honoured to give Daisy this award today, and thank her for reflecting what it means to be a Dio girl. Congratulations, Daisy!
Isabelle Dunlop
Isabelle is a kind, and incredibly down to earth member of Year 13. She leads with a quiet confidence that earns respect without ever seeking recognition. Whether it’s in her leadership as Cowie tutor Captain or simply the way she approaches each day, Isabelle always carries herself with an admirable humility. This year marked the end of Isabelle’s final season of rowing, closing a meaningful chapter in her time at Dio. Over the years, she has been an invaluable member of the rowing community. Isobel has consistently embodied the spirit of teamwork through her assured and dependable character, diligent in her work ethic, gracious in her talent, and always encouraging to those around her. We are very proud to recognise Isabelle today as a deserving recipient of the Honorary Prefect title. Congratulations, Isabelle!
Indigo Riley
Indie is the definition of warmth, kindness and quiet confidence. She has a unique ability to make anyone feel welcome, and is someone who brings a calm and comforting energy wherever she goes. Indie is incredibly easy to talk to, never judgemental and is always willing to lend an ear. Her sincerity shines through in everything that she does, and there truly isn’t a mean bone in her body. She’s someone who gets along with everyone, not by trying to be the loudest in the room, but by being consistently thoughtful, open-hearted and genuine. Whether she’s on the hockey turf, in the classroom or simply just having a conversation in the hallway, Indie approaches life with dedication and grace. Her quiet leadership, compassion and commitment to others make her an incredible role model to her peers and younger students alike and we see this as she carries out her role as Deputy Head of Cowie. Indie’s ability to uplift others through her presence alone is a gift to our community. She is a more than deserving recipient of this recognition, and we are so lucky to celebrate her today. Congratulations, Indie!
Xanthe Miller
Xanthe has always been a bright and uplifting presence within the Year 13 cohort. Her positive energy, warm smile, and approachable nature make her a familiar and comforting face around the school, especially in the common rooms, where her cheerful greetings are a constant source of light in the early mornings. Xanthe is someone who genuinely cares about the people around her. Her encouragement is never forced, she’s simply the kind of person who will always check in, offer support, and lift others up without being asked. Beyond her kindness, Xanthe’s determination and inner drive are equally remarkable. Whether it’s in her academic work or her dedication to swimming, Xanthe brings focus, perseverance, and discipline to everything she commits to. Her ability to balance this determination with warmth and humility makes her someone many look up to. Xanthe leads through quiet consistency, kind-hearted action, and an unwavering commitment to being her best self, not just for her own success, but to inspire others too. We’re proud to recognise Xanthe today, and celebrate all that she brings to our community. Congratulations, Xanthe!
