Junior School Spotlight Series: Education Outside the Classroom
Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) is an essential part of our learning journey, providing opportunities for our girls to build confidence, independence, and teamwork through real-world experiences that extend beyond the classroom.

1. Why EOTC Matters

Education Outside the Classroom is a vital part of the learning journey. For our girls, it’s where they experience times of collaboration, leadership, and resilience that come to life beyond the classroom walls. These experiences nurture independence, confidence and connection, helping students to see themselves as capable and resourceful learners.

2. Our Philosophy and Approach

We see EOTC as an extension of our curriculum and our values. Whether exploring nature, trying something new, or working as a team, each moment outside the classroom builds on the Learner Profile attributes we aim to develop — risk-taking, caring, reflective, and principled. Our approach is grounded in challenge, choice, and connection. We encourage each girl to step outside her comfort zone, to find joy in discovery, and to build lasting friendships along the way.

3. How we Teach This at Different Ages

Year 3 – One Night Away
For many, this is their first camp experience. The focus is on belonging, cooperation, and confidence. One night away from home, sleeping at school, offers just the right balance of excitement and reassurance, helping girls experience success and pride in managing themselves independently.

Year 4 – Two Nights Away
With a little more time and distance from home, Year 4 girls build on teamwork and problem-solving. Activities often connect to their Units of Inquiry, encouraging curiosity about the world and the environment. Currently, this camp is held at MERC in Long Bay, Auckland.

Year 5 – Three Nights Away
By Year 5, students take on greater responsibility and leadership within their groups. They learn to plan, communicate, and support one another through new challenges, from rock climbing to kayaking. This camp is held at the YMCA Shakespear Lodge in Whangaparaoa.

Year 6 – Four Nights Away
The Year 6 girls spend a school week at Camp Benson on Kawau Island, a camp experience that brings together all the skills they’ve developed over their primary years. It’s a celebration of independence and teamwork, offering opportunities for reflection, resilience, and leadership. They learn additional water skills, such as how to sail an Optimist (small, single-handed sailing dinghy), as well as challenges such as the confidence course.

4. Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from how I learned at school?
Our EOTC experiences are closely linked to the curriculum and the Learner Profile attributes, not just outdoor adventure. They’re designed to integrate personal growth with academic learning.

What if my daughter finds it hard to be away from home?
We scaffold the experience carefully. Starting with one night and building gradually helps every girl develop confidence at her own pace. Our staff provide strong support, ensuring each student feels safe, encouraged, and capable.

How do you extend girls who are ready for more challenge?
Each camp includes opportunities for leadership, initiative, and personal goal-setting. We encourage every girl to set her own challenges, whether that’s leading a group, mastering a new skill, or supporting others.

How can parents support this at home?
You can help by talking positively about the experience, involving your daughter in packing and planning, and celebrating her independence when she returns, even the small wins, like making her own bed or trying something new.

5. What Success Looks Like

Success in EOTC is seen in the smiles, teamwork, and stories that return with the girls. It’s in the growth of confidence, the kindness shown to others, and the ability to adapt and persevere. Our Year 3–6 camps lay the groundwork for lifelong learners who are not only curious and capable, but also compassionate, courageous, and connected to the world around them.
