Junior School Subject Spotlight: Performing Arts
Why Performing Arts Matter

Performing Arts play a vital role in nurturing confidence, creativity, and collaboration. Through music, drama, and performance, students learn to express themselves, listen closely to others, and take pride in sharing their talents. For our girls, these experiences build self-assurance and a strong sense of voice, skills that reach far beyond the lessons.

Our Philosophy and Approach

Our Performing Arts programme is grounded in the belief that every student can find joy and confidence through music and performance. We focus on participation, skill development, and teamwork. Whether singing in a group, playing an instrument, or performing in front of an audience, students learn to take creative risks in a supportive environment where effort and growth are celebrated.

How We Teach This at Different Ages

  • Years 0–2: Students enjoy class music lessons filled with rhythm, movement, and song. They explore beat, pitch, and simple instruments, laying the foundation for musical understanding.

  • Years 3–4: Students extend their musical skills through group singing, tuned percussion, and the introduction of string instruments. They begin to read simple notation and play together.

  • Year 5: A highlight of the year is the Year 5 Production, where students take part in a full-scale musical performance. This experience builds confidence, teamwork, and stage presence while combining acting, singing, and dance. In music classes, they also learn either a brass or woodwind instrument.

  • Year 6: Students continue to refine their musicianship, taking on leadership roles in choirs and music groups. Their class music sessions continue to develop confidence and musical enjoyment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from how I learned at school?
Our programme focuses on exploration and collaboration, rather than rote learning or performance perfection. Every child has the chance to find their musical strengths, or just enjoy being part of the lessons.

What if my daughter finds it hard?
We support students with differentiated learning opportunities, from small group practice to performances suited to individual confidence levels. The focus is on participation so all students can be involved and enjoy it.

How do you extend students who are ready for more?
Advanced instrumental tuition and ensemble opportunities challenge and extend students as they progress.

How can parents support this at home?
Encouragement is key. Celebrating effort, attending performances, and listening to a wide variety of music together all make a difference.

What Success Looks Like

Success in the Performing Arts is seen in the joyful singing during assemblies, the teamwork in rehearsals, and the pride students feel after a performance. Confidence, resilience, and creativity shine through, both on stage and in the classroom.
