We have limited spaces in the Health Centre and it is better to avoid further spreading of viruses. Early symptoms are often hard to distinguish as to whether they are a usual flu virus or covid, or something more serious. Auckland is also facing the possibility of a Measles outbreak after a worker on local ferries was found to be infectious. We hope the information below will raise awareness and help us be prepared in case there are further outbreaks.
Preparing in case of a Measles Outbreak
As you may have heard in the news, there has been a confirmed case of measles in the Auckland community. Public Health experts have been expecting this to happen for some time, given the rising cases overseas. New Zealand has had declining rates of immunisation in the last few years, with current levels at their lowest in 15 years. Considering this, we are taking proactive steps to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff.
The best way to protect your child is to ensure that they are fully immunised. Close contacts of measles cases who are not immunised may need to isolate for up to two weeks. Please refer to the Measles help sheet which has been prepared by our wonderful nurses in the Health Centre. (Link to measles sheet).
What is Measles?
Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through coughing, sneezing, and close contact with an infected person. It can lead to serious complications, such as pneumonia and even death, especially in young children and individuals with weakened immune systems.
What to watch for?
Symptoms:
Symptoms typically appear 7 to 14 days after exposure. If your child shows any of these signs, keep them home from school and contact your healthcare provider immediately.
Check your child’s Immunisation Status:
It’s important to ensure that your child is protected. The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) is highly effective in preventing measles.
If you’re unsure whether your child has received the MMR vaccine or is fully immunised:
How to Protect your family
We will continue to follow guidance from local health authorities. Your vigilance and cooperation are crucial in preventing the spread of measles within our school and community.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office or your local healthcare provider.
