Linda Hall Joins Dio to Strengthen Maths Learning from the Ground Up
We are thrilled to welcome Linda Hall as the new Mathematics Specialist in the Junior School at Diocesan School for Girls.

With a unique blend of experience in both business and education, Linda brings a practical, real-world lens to the teaching of mathematics—alongside a deep passion for supporting every student’s learning journey.

Before transitioning to education in 2012, Linda built a successful career as an Accounting Manager in the manufacturing sector. She holds a Bachelor of Business Studies, a National Diploma in Business, a Diploma in Management, and a Graduate Diploma in Teaching from the University of Auckland. Most recently, she taught in a Year 5/6 classroom at Titirangi Primary School in West Auckland, where she led both curriculum design and mathematics programmes.

Linda also held a leadership role as an ‘Across School Teacher’ within her Kahui Ako—a collaborative community of teachers working across Years 1–13. “That experience really highlighted the power of sharing knowledge and working together to improve maths outcomes,” she reflects. “It reinforced my belief that collaboration between educators can transform how students experience and enjoy maths.”

Linda’s journey into teaching was inspired by her own son. “We knew he was a little different. When he started school, he had a real knack for problem-solving, which placed him in a Year 6 maths class while still in Year 1,” she recalls. “Observing his teacher in that environment made me realise how much I wanted to be part of that world. I knew I could combine the financial knowledge I’d gained in my career with a passion for helping kids succeed and feel confident in maths. So, I took the leap and enrolled in teacher training the following year.”

Supporting Students and Teachers Alike

Linda’s love for maths started in her own school days, sparked initially by an interest in accounting. “When I began teaching, I realised my enthusiasm for maths was contagious—and it’s only grown since then,” she says.

Building on Dio’s already strong mathematics programme, the school employed Linda to further enhance and extend the opportunities available to both students and staff.

At Dio, Linda works closely with teachers to support lesson planning and delivery, while also providing targeted support and extension for students. “It’s about ensuring teachers feel supported and confident, and giving students the chance to grow—whatever level they’re at.”

Her approach includes designing rich, real-world maths tasks for advanced learners that unfold over several sessions, encouraging deep exploration and problem-solving. For students who need extra support, her sessions focus on skill-building and confidence. “I love helping students develop a growth mindset. They quickly learn to say, ‘I can’t do this… yet.’ That one word, changes everything.”

Looking Ahead: Confidence, Challenge, and Financial Literacy

In her first term at Dio, Linda is already involved in existing initiatives such as the Maths Olympiad for Years 5–6 and is preparing students for the Mathex competitions in Term 3.Looking ahead, she plans to introduce new opportunities to inspire and engage Junior School students, including fun, school-wide activities during NZ Maths Week.

With financial literacy set to become a core part of the curriculum from Year 1 by 2027, Linda is eager to bring real-life concepts into the classroom. “Talking about spending, saving, and understanding needs versus wants fits naturally within maths lessons. It’s a great way to make learning meaningful and relevant.”

Linda’s vision for Junior School mathematics is clear and inspiring:
“I want every girl to feel confident and positive about maths—and to look forward to learning it. That’s the foundation for everything.”
