As the house lights faded to darkness, a hush encompassed a large crowd in our Performing Arts Centre. With one show completed on 21 June and one show scheduled for 22 June – we will see around 36 eclectic acts and over 350 performers. The programme includes junior students who step foot on stage for the very first time, to some of our most esteemed young dancers. Despite the large number of performers, the choreography is well-designed to allow each dancer to shine in their own way. The group formations and transitions are seamless, and the dancers move together with a sense of unity and coordination that is truly impressive.
The first evening opened with our very own Kapa Haka group led by the wonderful Kali Haenga performing a beautiful waiata and blessing. This led on to a poi performance to further uplift the mauri (life force and energy) of the space. Also included in the programme was Bollywood, Chinese, Pacifica, Jazz, Lyrical, Hip Hop and Contemporary dances. Particularly of note were the senior curriculum dance items as well as our award winning Hip Hop MEGACREW. Dance continues to grow rapidly both as a subject area and for our co-curricular arts programme. We are so very thankful to have such wonderful dance facilitators to support the talent of these incredible Dio dancers.
