Participation in Sport at Dio
Our philosophy, "more girls, more active, more fun, more often," emphasises the importance of staying fit and healthy.

We believe that engaging in sports helps our students develop valuable life skills, form lifelong friendships, and create unforgettable memories. From teamwork and commitment to resilience and time management, sports teach our girls how to handle both success and failure with grace.

There’s a place for every student in our sports programs, whether they’re just starting out or aiming for high performance. We cater to all levels, providing foundational development across multiple sports, fun recreational activities, and pathways for those with goals of representing the country or earning overseas scholarships. Our unique all-girls environment fosters camaraderie and support, helping our athletes feel empowered and confident in their abilities.

It’s also a great opportunity to learn leadership skills, and our student coaches – more than 100 of them – learn to be role models, mentors, and effective communicators, preparing them for the future. It also instils a sense of responsibility and pride in contributing to the school community.

Tailored for the female athlete

The differences and unique needs of the female athlete are finally being acknowledged and supported by detailed research. As an all-girl school, we are passionate about supporting female athletes – a commitment that is exemplified by one of our standout initiatives – our “Raising a Young Female Athlete” programme. This programme focuses on four pillars: mindset, nutrition, physical capacity, and understanding the menstrual cycle and its impact on performance. Now in its third year, it provides education and support for our young women in sport, including hosted evenings with speakers such as Dr. Claire Badenhorst, an expert in exercise and sport physiology for young women.

Nurturing high performance athletes

Premier sports teams and athletes are well supported through our LEAP programme (Leading our Emergent Athletes), which is specifically designed for the unique needs of young women across different sporting codes, ensuring they receive the best possible guidance and support. This includes workshops, assistance in managing workload, injury prevention strategies and strength and conditioning sessions. For example, female athletes can be more susceptible to injuries so we’ve introduced strength training to many team programmes.  We had more than 30 international representatives from across a range of sports at the school last year.

Exceptional leaders and State-of-the-art facilities

Our Sports Department is led by exceptional leaders and coaches, including internationally recognised figures. Their expertise and dedication drive our sports programmes, ensuring that our students receive top-tier coaching and mentorship.

We are incredibly proud of our state-of-the-art sporting facilities. Our Aquatic Centre is a year-round resource that allows students to engage in water sports like swimming and water polo. Additionally, our multi-purpose artificial sports turf hosts regular competitive fixtures, training sessions, and various sporting events, providing exciting opportunities for our girls to hone their skills in a safe and supportive environment.

We look forward to seeing our girls participating and having fun over the year and celebrating with them.
