Reporting to Junior High Parents and Students
At Diocesan we aim to provide important aspects of progress and achievement to parents and students. This information will vary across year levels because of the varying frameworks that support our comprehensive curriculum and qualifications.

We hope that this information will help you to understand the purpose of each report so that you can see key components of their education:

  • Overall Achievement – overall achievement scores will compare your daughter’s achievement against standards that are moderated across New Zealand.
  • Progress – progress is judged by each teacher and is covered by report comments.  It is the pace and improvement in learning that your daughter is achieving.
  • Service, Activities and Contribution – mid-year and end of year reports will list the activities and contribution that each student participates in during the year.
  • Attendance – we do not report attendance information unless attendance drops below acceptable levels. This is addressed outside of the reporting cycle.  We have attendance support staff who assist deans and tutor teachers to identify and resolve attendance issues.

We hope the summary will below will give you an overview for this year about what will be reported.

From Years 7–10: there are three written reports for students in Years 7-10.

  1. An Interim Report in March

This early report means we will be commenting on how well the student has settled into the year and her level of engagement. We will also provide a copy of your daughter’s Progressive Achievement Tests (a copy of these assessments is already available online). The PATs are norm referenced and compare your daughter’s achievement with all other students of the same year level across New Zealand.  You will see on the graphs where she is achieving.  Typically the graph shows a Stanine of 1 to 9, where 1 is low achievement and 9 is high, with 5 being the average score.  The tests cover:

  • PAT Listening Comprehension
  • PAT Mathematics
  • PAT Reading Comprehension
  • PAT Reading Vocabulary

These assessments are an interim tool to support teachers to design programmes at the appropriate level of challenge for all students. They are undertaken annually in Years 7-10.

  1. A Mid-Year Achievement and Progress Report – in June. This report will include a student’s overall achievement and a comment from the Dean, Tutor and each subject teacher which indicates the student’s progress.

We deliver the Year 7-10 curriculum through the MYP – Middle Years Programme.  Each curriculum area has subject specific criteria for assessment that will be reported. There are four criteria per subject (A-D) and within each criteria there are 8 levels of achievement.  Achieving an 8 means that the student is at the highest level of understanding.  Each criteria is assessed twice during the year. For the Mid-Year report, not all the criteria will have been assessed.

  1. The End of Year Achievement and Progress Report – December

The final report for the year covers all of the achievement and progress for each subject area studied using the MYP subject criteria (0 to 8) including any interdisciplinary units studied, and in Year 10 the service learning component – Community Project.

The Dean, Tutor and subject teachers will comment on each student’s progress and will note involvement in school activities.
