School Leadership Announcement
A note from Jenny Spillane (Chair of Diocesan Board of Governors) and Heather McRae (Principal of Diocesan School for Girls)

From Jenny Spillane, Chair of the Diocesan School Board of Governors

It is with deep appreciation for Heather McRae’s exceptional leadership – and a sense of sadness – that I share the news that Diocesan’s Principal will be retiring at the end of Term 1, 2026.

Heather has been a remarkable leader for the past 17 years, guiding Diocesan with vision, strength and compassion and she will always be a treasured member of the Dio family. Her belief in the potential of every student has left a lasting legacy and we will all miss her presence at Dio. She has also made a significant contribution to the broader education sector, generously sharing her expertise and always seeking to raise the bar for what great education can look like. Heather will continue this important work, with a focus on lifting the quality of teaching across the profession.

While her presence will be deeply missed, we are extremely grateful for the strong foundations she leaves behind. The Board has now begun the process of identifying our next principal, and we are committed to finding a leader who will honour our school’s values while continuing to build on the momentum and vision that Heather has championed for Dio.

Jenny Spillane

Board Chair

From Principal, Heather McRae

As Jenny has indicated, I have enjoyed many wonderful years at Dio and confirm my plan to retire at the end of Term 1, 2026. It has been an incredible privilege to serve as Principal of Diocesan School and this decision comes with a deep sense of both gratitude and reflection.

Throughout my time at Diocesan, I’ve had the joy of watching countless students grow—arriving as curious young learners and leaving as confident, capable young women, ready to take on the world. I have also been fortunate to work alongside a passionate and dedicated team of teachers and staff, and to partner with a supportive and engaged parent community and board who truly value education. Together, we have created an environment where our young women are known, valued and inspired to achieve their best.

I will take with me many treasured memories of school productions, sports days, assemblies, and the everyday moments that make this school such a special place.  Diocesan’s rich history provides us with a strong foundation to build on and our vision for a world class education for young women remains as relevant and powerful as ever. Our school has always adapted to change with courage and confidence, and I believe that we are exceptionally well placed to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future.

Although I am stepping away from the role, I leave with immense pride in all that we have achieved together. The school is in good heart with a brilliant teaching team and a strong capable leadership team who will continue to guide Diocesan with care, purpose and vision.

Thank you for your trust, your support and the partnership we have shared over the years. It has truly been an honour to be part of your daughters’ learning journeys. Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui – Ut Serviamus.
