Q. What are your favourite aspects of the Arts and why?
A. I believe that one of the most special aspects of the arts is the way it brings people together. There’s something truly amazing about walking into a rehearsal room and connecting instantly with a group of people who all share the same passion for expressing themselves through song, dance, and performance as you. The sense of community built around this common interest is so uplifting and motivational. I believe that whether you’re performing or watching, the arts allow people to be their authentic selves and communicate feelings and ideas in a way that words often can’t. I find that it builds connections, not just between performers, but also with the audience.
Q. What are some past Arts achievements that you are proud of?
A. At the beginning of the year, I was given the opportunity to be the Bella Cantoris Choir leader for 2024. It was an honour to have been selected for this role as it allowed me to support and build connections with singers like myself. Another achievement that I am extremely proud of was winning first place in the Junior Aria Competition in both 2023 and 2024. I believe that these achievements show the dedication I’ve put into my singing and I am grateful that I have had the support system around me to be able to work towards this achievement. One of my standout moments was playing Elsa in Diocesan’s production of Frozen the Musical last year. It was such a special experience to bring an iconic character like Elsa to life on stage. Lastly, being one of the youngest members in St Cecilia Singers for 2024 has been both a challenge and an honour, and it’s something I’m really proud of achieving.
Q. What was your experience playing Elsa for last year’s Junior High School production of Frozen? What is your favourite part about performing?
A. Playing Elsa in Frozen the Musical was both thrilling and nerve-wracking. I definitely felt the pressure of portraying such a beloved character who is confident, independent, and a role model to many, including myself. It pushed me to grow as a performer and as a person. My favourite part of performing was everything—from meeting the cast on the first day who are now some of the closest friends, to the emotional moments of the final curtain call. Performing in the arts has taught me so much about leadership, teamwork, and empathy, and each of these skills has helped me thrive both on and off stage.
Q. Do you play any instruments/sing/speech and drama? What do you enjoy about these things?
A. I’ve been playing the guitar since I was young and was taught by my grandfather. It’s more than just an instrument to me; it’s a way of building discipline, hard work, and self-control. I believe that these qualities are important in all aspects of life. That is why I’ve continued playing the guitar for so long. Singing, however, is one of my main priorities and focuses in my life right now. I sing both musical theatre and classical music, and although it takes up a large part of my life, I love how it constantly challenges me to step outside my comfort zone. It pushes me to grow and to keep striving for improvement.
Q. Are you involved in any Arts groups at school and what do you enjoy about them?
A. I’m involved in two of my school’s choirs, Bella Cantoris and St Cecilia Singers. Bella Cantoris has given me the opportunity to grow as a leader, especially as the 2024 Choir Leader. It’s been such a rewarding experience working with a talented group of singers as we helped and supported one another throughout the year. St Cecilia Singers has been an entirely different experience as I’m one of the youngest members. The level of commitment, focus, and hard work required is intense, but I’ve loved every second of it. The choir members were so welcoming and supportive when I joined, which made the transition so much easier. I have learned so much from St C in less than a year and am incredibly excited to hopefully have more time in this choir in the years to come.
Q. Finally, what are your hopes for your Arts journey in the future? Any advice for girls trying to start their Arts journey?
A. Looking ahead, I hope to continue participating in school musicals each year and aim to be the Arts Prefect for Year 13 in 2027. At the same time, I want to support and encourage the people around me and help the younger girls find their place in the arts at Dio as the older girls have done for me. My advice for anyone starting their arts journey is to embrace every opportunity, no matter how small it seems. Push yourself, work hard, and stay passionate. The arts can teach you so much about yourself and help you grow in ways you might never expect.
