Spotlight on Dio Artist Luna Zhang
Get to know Year 8 student, Luna Zhang.

Q. What are your favourite artistic disciplines and how long have you been doing them for?

A. I have been doing art since Year 1, but started properly 2 years. Last year was the first time I sent out my art to art competitions.

Q. What form of visual arts do you like the most and why?

A. My favourite form of visual arts is painting. This is something that I’ve been drawn to because I love how expressive and layered it can be. The colours can tell a story itself.

Q. What are some of your achievements in the arts that you are proud of?

A. I’m really proud of having my art chosen in the Louvre UWEE competition this year. I have a few others that I have submitted, but this one specifically shows my improvement over the years.

Q. How often do you produce your artwork? Do you make art outside of school as well as inside of school?

A. I do art once a week for around five hours after school. It’s quite relaxing when you can paint after a busy day. This is a piece that I did for fun last year.

Q. How would you describe your work process for art?

A. I usually start with a theme if I’m doing art competitions, then I will put all my favourite ideas into one idea. Then I will just start planning things out. Then I will do a base colour- usually a brownish burnt ember colour or grey base. Then I will slowly add colours on top layering it. This makes the colours pop more and adds more detail.

Q. Are you currently working on anything? What’s coming up for you after your Louvre competition success?

A. I have recently sent a few other works to different places which includes one which was sent to Japan. The main one I’m hoping to get results for is one from “Sketch for survival”, which is more difficult to get in than the UWEE Louvre museum.

Q. Finally, what are your hopes and goals for your arts journey in the future? Where would you like to be when you reach Year 13?

A. By Year 13, I want to become a part of the arts council. I hope that my art will improve even more in that time, and maybe I will share some of my works with a wider audience.
