Top Independent School in New Zealand – 2025 NCEA Results
Following another year of outstanding academic achievement from its students, Diocesan School for Girls is the top-performing independent school in New Zealand based on the 2025 NCEA results,

Students delivered exceptional results in both NCEA Level 2 and Level 3, with 100% pass rates at both levels and very high levels of Merit and Excellence endorsements. The results place Dio ahead of other independent schools* nationally and significantly above national averages across all schools.

Principal Heather McRae said the results reflect the dedication of both students and staff. “These results are ultimately about our students,” said Ms McRae. “They reflect a community that values learning, supports one another and celebrates the success of every girl.”

Results compared National and Other Independent schools

When compared with schools nationwide — including both state and independent schools — Dio students performed well above national averages in both attainment and endorsement levels.

A particularly strong feature of the results is the consistently high proportion of Excellence endorsements, highlighting the depth of academic achievement across the cohort.

The Strength of Girls’ Education

These results reinforce a growing body of international research which shows that girls thrive academically in all-girls learning environments.

At Dio, the all-girls setting encourages students to participate fully, take intellectual risks and pursue excellence across every subject area — from sciences and mathematics to physical education. Within this environment, students build confidence in their abilities, develop leadership and find their voice, helping them thrive both during their school years and beyond.

Principal Heather McRae said “We are very proud of our girls. These outcomes reflect not only their academic ability but also their resilience, focus and willingness to challenge themselves. They also speak to the quality of teaching and the culture at our school”.
