Why this matters

For over 100 years, the Chapel and St Barnabas have stood at the spiritual and cultural heart of Diocesan. They’ve been the setting for baptisms and farewells, weekly services, weddings, and quiet reflection – a sacred space for generations of students, staff, and families.

Today, the Chapel needs us more than ever. What began as a restoration became a rescue mission when investigations revealed that the situation was more serious than anticipated. Among the issues uncovered were a structurally unsound chancel arch and rotten timber foundations beneath St Barnabas. Without urgent action, our much-loved Chapel was at real risk.

While major work is underway, this is our opportunity to safeguard the Chapel for the future. With your help, we can complete the project to the highest standard, preserving its significance for current and future generations.

“Second only to building it, restoring the Chapel is one of the most meaningful projects Dio will ever do.”
– Katherine Woods, alumna and staff member

The challenge

The original cost estimate of $4.8 million has risen to $6.3 million due to the extent of the damage uncovered. Diocesan is committed to completing the project, so every dollar raised reduces the financial burden on the school and helps ensure the Chapel is restored with the care and craftsmanship it deserves.

We are aiming to raise $1.1 million from our Dio community. Your support will directly fund restoration, including heritage features such as the stained-glass windows, sarked timber ceilings, and original kauri floor.

Every contribution makes a difference. Without additional support, some finishing touches may be delayed, but with your help, we can preserve the Chapel’s significance for current and future generations.

This is our opportunity

Work is already underway, and community support will make a real difference. Together, we can complete the restoration and ensure the Chapel continues to play a meaningful role in school life for many years to come.

“Restoring the Chapel honours the heart of our school and ensures it remains a place of connection and spiritual growth for generations to come.”
– Nicole Lewis, alumna and staff member
