The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award challenges students to dream big and discover their potential.

This programme helps students leave their comfort zones through learning new skills, being physically active, taking part in adventures, giving service to the community. The 3-4 year journey to complete the Gold Award builds self-confidence and greater resilience.

Students need to be self-motivated, focused, hardworking and determined through difficult and sometimes very challenging times. The life skills learned with Duke of Edinburgh will set them apart, and set them up for success in today’s world.

How the Awards work

There are 3 Award levels

Bronze – Start from the year the student turns 14. It will take a minimum of 6 months

Silver – Start at 15 or when the Bronze Award is finished. It will take a minimum of 6 months

Gold – Start at 16 of when the Silver Award is finished. It will take a minimum of 12 months

Each Award level is divided into four Award Sections

Skills – Master an existing skill or learn something new. For example learning Te Reo Maori or learning to drive (clearly age dependent).

Physical recreation – Improve physical health and move your body. For example take part in sport, dance, personal fitness or outdoor activities

Voluntary Service – Give back and make a difference to your community. For example you could volunteer at your school, local community or support a cause you care about

Adventurous Journey – Go on a team adventure and step outside your comfort zone. For example, plan and complete a journey with your peers while explore the great outdoors
