In Year 9 the Service Learning program aims to help students advance as IB learners and develop their attributes of empathy and compassion. The cohort have heard from three guest speakers and participated in tutor activities to unpack the reasons why and how someone can become a refugee.
On Wednesday, students participated in an afternoon experience called Walk the Talk where they put themselves into the shoes of a young person fleeing their home in search of safety and came up against various scenarios such as preparing a safe place to sleep, crossing a body of water or providing first aid. Students also went on a short walk to experience the journey that refugees make on foot. The average distance to safety is 250km.
An excerpt of our script:
“On this journey you will face challenges similar to those that real refugees encounter: crossing borders, finding shelter, and overcoming language barriers. As you navigate this experience, remember: this is more than just a simulation. This is about understanding the profound struggles of millions of people around the world who must flee their homes. Let’s approach this exercise with empathy and an open heart.”
Year 9 students sought sponsorship for their Walk the Talk challenge which fundraises for Operation Refugee.
