The competition challenged students to apply their mathematical modelling and problem-solving skills to a complex real-world scenario: “If an asteroid was detected today on a collision course to hit New Zealand in 2029, what is the largest size that could be safely deflected using current technologies?”
On Saturday 8 August, the trio worked diligently from 10am to 6pm, developing a mathematical model and producing a detailed report to explain and justify their approach. They even had some moral support from Ollie, the school cat!
When the results were announced on Thursday 22 October, the team was delighted to receive a Highly Commended award, recognising their impressive analytical thinking, teamwork and dedication.
Congratulations to Anna, Cici and Hana on this excellent achievement.
