At the recent New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships in Wellington, Sophia exemplified the spirit of Ko Tātou and the values that define the Dio community through her resilience, sportsmanship, and unwavering support of her teammates.
As expected, typical Wellington weather made the challenging 4km cross country course even tougher, with deep mud, steeples, slippery hills, and water crossings. To add to the challenge, Sophia lost one of her racing spikes during the first lap. In such wet and demanding conditions, spikes are essential for grip and stability, yet losing a shoe did not deter her. Sophia continued to push through the course with remarkable determination, finishing an impressive 47th out of 117 athletes. In a courageous final effort, she overtook several runners in the closing stages of the race, making a significant contribution to the Dio Senior Girls six-person team securing the national title.
The resilience, perseverance, and positive attitude Sophia displayed throughout the race were truly inspiring and served as a powerful example to everyone around her, particularly the younger members of the team.
Congratulations, Sophia, and thank you for being such an outstanding role model. Your determination and commitment exemplify the values of Ko Tātou and the very best of the Dio spirit.
