Spotlight on Dio Artist Angel Tao
Get to know Year 10 student, Angel Tao.

Q. What are your favourite aspects of the arts and how long have you been doing them for?

A. Some of my favourite aspects of the arts are music – being able to express myself. My primary instrument is the violin, which I have been playing for about 6 to 7 years. I also enjoy playing the viola (2 years), piano (6 years), percussion (6 years), and singing (6 years). I also enjoy dance which I’ve been doing for 7 years and art (and crafts) for about 8 years.

Q. What are some past arts achievements that you are proud of?

A.

  • APPA most promising – violin
  • Semi-finalist of National String Competition – violin
  • Winner of many regional competitions – violin
  • National finalist of NZCT Chamber music contest – viola
  • Finalist for Hong Kong International competition – violin
  • Winner of Singapore International competition – violin
  • Playing with MSO and NSO – violin
  • LTCL diploma – violin
  • Noble international online competition winner – violin

Q. Besides the violin, what other artistic disciplines are you interested in?

A. In music, I’m interested in composition, viola, piano, percussion, and singing. In dance, I practice ballet, lyrical, contemporary, and Chinese dance. I also enjoy arts, such as drawing and painting.

Q. What does your typical week look like in terms of your violin practice?

A.

Morning: Scales and technical warm-ups.

After school: Practice varies depending on my pieces and workload , but on an average day, I dedicate about 2 to 3 hours to my pieces. I typically spend around an hour on a caprice, with the remaining time focused on concertos, sonatas, and other repertoire.

(Excludes lessons, orchestra rehearsals, chamber music, and pianist rehearsals.)

Q. What is your favourite thing about performing?

A. I love the experience of being on stage and sharing music with an audience. Performing allows me to grow as a musician by reflecting on each performance and finding ways to improve. It’s also incredibly fulfilling to bring joy to others through music.

What are you most looking forward to this year at Dio?

A. Being able to play in the orchestras and chamber groups and seeing our progress before KBB and NZCT.

Q. Tell us about the exciting journey you are taking to the New England Conservatory, what about it are you most looking forward to?

A. I’m looking forward to meeting other musicians who share my passion, performing in a professional setting, and learning from inspiring mentors. It’s an exciting opportunity to grow in the arts.

Q. Finally, looking to when you finish high school, what are your hopes for the future? Where would you like to be in your artistic career by that time?

A. I hope that in the future I will be able to achieve a career related to the arts – a professional musician, a composer, a graphic designer, a music teacher….
