On Thursday 30 April, 26 Dio Orienteers participated in the Auckland Secondary School Orienteering Relay at Muir's Farm in Waiuku.
This is a fast and furious form of orienteering, with an exciting mass start. To avoid competitors simply following each other around the course, each person has a slight variation in controls. This means that it is very easy to get confused and mispunches (selecting an incorrect control) are quite frequent.
The open farmland feels less scary than forest, but it does not make it any easier to find the controls, which will be located behind hills and in depressions. Without forest paths, reading contours is even more essential.
All our participants did well with the following team and individual achievements. Particular kudos goes to Lucy Robinson, who stepped up into the top junior team due to the illness of a more experienced orienteer, and helped them to a podium finish.
