A group of our talented students are currently designing, building, and developing their very own AquaBots as part of the NZAquaBots programme, run by the Ministry of Inspiration, a New Zealand charity dedicated to delivering hands-on, STEAM-based learning to children across the country.
So, what exactly is an AquaBot?
These are remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), underwater robots that students design and construct themselves. Once built, the ROVs are put to the test in a series of underwater challenges, including timed obstacle courses and tasks that require retrieving and repositioning objects beneath the surface. Every design decision matters, and students quickly discover that creativity and critical thinking go hand in hand.
Beyond the thrill of watching their creations come to life, our girls are developing a rich set of real-world skills along the way. From grasping core engineering concepts to practising scientific communication, problem solving, and collaborative teamwork, the programme offers a genuinely meaningful learning experience that reaches well beyond the classroom.
The stakes can get even higher. Each year, regional and national NZAquaBots competitions are held across New Zealand, with top-performing teams earning the opportunity to qualify for the prestigious international SeaPerch competition held in the United States.
We couldn’t be prouder of our students’ enthusiasm and dedication. Even Ollie, the school cat was in on the action! Watch this space, big things are coming from our AquaBots team!
