Senior Leadership Announcement
A note from Diocesan's new Executive Principal - Dr Sandra Hastie

Kia ora,

It is both an honour and a genuine pleasure to write to you on my first day as Executive Principal of Diocesan School for Girls. I am thrilled to become part of a vibrant community steeped in a proud tradition of empowering young women through exceptional education, and I eagerly anticipate immersing myself in all aspects of Dio life.

By way of introduction, I am a proud New Zealander returning home after several years in Australia, where my most recent appointment was Principal of Somerville House in Brisbane. Before that, I served as Principal of Rangi Ruru Girls’ School in Christchurch. My career has also encompassed senior leadership roles as Principal of Saint Kentigern’s Girls School and Head of Primary for both Saint Kentigern schools. Throughout my professional journey, I have been dedicated to fostering environments where young women are inspired to discover their strengths, pursue their ambitions, and develop the confidence, resilience, and integrity to shape their own futures.

One of the many reasons I was drawn to Diocesan is the strong alignment between my own values and those of the school.  As your Principal I am committed to leading with a future-focused mindset—embracing innovation, global perspective and academic excellence, while remaining deeply connected to the traditions, values and spirit that make Dio such a remarkable community. Our responsibility is to prepare our girls not only for further study and successful careers, but for meaningful, fulfilling lives where they can make a difference.

I believe every school has its own heartbeat—a unique rhythm shaped by its people, traditions and values. I am genuinely excited to learn the “Dio Way”, discover what gives this community its distinctive spirit, and celebrate all that makes it so special. My priority in these first months will be to listen and learn. I look forward to meeting students, staff, parents and alumnae, hearing your stories, and gaining insight into the experiences and traditions that have shaped this school. Strong schools are built on strong relationships, and together we will build on the many strengths already present, ensuring Dio’s unique heartbeat continues to resonate boldly and proudly.

I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of outgoing Principal Heather McRae. Over her 17 years of service, Heather led Diocesan with vision, care and dedication, leaving a legacy that is evident throughout the school. I am grateful to join a community so positively shaped by her leadership and wish her every success as she embarks on the next chapter of her professional journey.

Thank you for the warm welcome I have already received. I look forward to meeting many of you over the coming weeks and collaborating as we embark on this exciting new chapter together. My hope is that, as a community, we will continue to ensure Diocesan remains a place where every girl is inspired, challenged, and empowered. Here, she will find champions who believe in her, encourage her, share in both her joys and disappointments, and allow her to embrace her individuality – a person of worth, and a young woman who truly belongs.

Ngā mihi nui,

Dr Sandra Hastie
